Getting started with your NDIS

Check to see if you're eligible for NDIS support:

You will be eligible to access support from the NDIS if you have a disability that is permanent. This means a disability that affects the way you live and your functional capacity. Permanent impartments may be intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, physical, or psychosocial. You may also receive NDIS support if this support will help you in the later stages of your life.

Other criteria to access the NDIS includes:

  • Live in Australia
  • Hold a permanent visa or Protected Special Category Visa, and
  • Be under the age of 65

Do you meet the eligibility criteria?

Great. You can take the next step towards receiving support. Just contact the NDIS and ask for an Access Request form, or download the form on the NDIS website.

Prepare for your planning meeting

Once you have been approved to receive NDIS support, the next step is to prepare for your NDIS planning meeting with a planner from the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) or a Local Area Coordinator (LAC). In this meeting, you will develop your NDIS plan. This plan will include information about your goals and what supports you will receive.

So, what do you need to bring to your planning meeting? Please bring:

  • Proof of identity
  • Any aids or equipment you use
  • MyGov login and password
  • Bank account information
  • Medical information

After your planning conversation, a decision will be made whether your plan has been approved or not. If your plan has been approved you will receive a copy of the plan within 7 days. You can also access your plan on the myplace portal and the NDIS app.

Implementing your NDIS plan

Now that your NDIS plan has been approved, you can start your NDIS journey. Your NDIS plan will have five parts:

  1. Information about you
  2. Family and friends
  3. Services and community groups
  4. Your goals
  5. Funded supports

Your funding will be split into three different support budgets depending on your needs. These are:

  1. Core supports
  2. Capital supports
  3. Capacity building supports

Your NDIS plan will also include information about how you can manage your funding, which could be managed through:

  • Self-managed – you can manage your own plan
  • Plan manager – a plan manager can manage your plan
  • NDIA managed – the NDIA can manage your plan
